Being a volcanic island, Maui contains some truly outstanding natural landmarks and monuments. Maui boasts one of the largest Indian Banyan trees in the world, some fascinating lava formations, spectacular waterfalls and a gigantic volcanic crater with a circumference of 22 miles / 35 km.
The island's Iao Needle, a huge natural rock pinnacle, also serves as an impressive landmark and there is a great lighthouse-cum-lookout that marks the perfect place for whale watching in Maui during the winter months. Here are some of Maui's main monuments and landmarks.

Situated in the Iao Valley State Park, the Iao Needle is a 2,250-foot / 685-meter high rock pinnacle that towers over the Iao Stream and volcano crater. The impressive rock tower is one of Maui's most photographed features and the surrounding area is stunning, making it an ideal place to picnic.

Maui Landmarks and Monuments: Banyan Tree Park - Front Street, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii (HI), USA
Situated on Front Street between Hotel and Canal streets, this Banyan tree is considered a Maui landmark. The tree was imported from India in 1873 and stood at only 8 feet / 2.5 meters tall. It is now over 60 feet / 18 meters high and has 12 major trunks, making it one of the biggest Indian Banyan trees in the world.

Formed from lava, Black Rock divides Kaanapali Beach and is shrouded in mythology. Legend has it that warrior spirits departed the earth to be reunited with their ancestors by jumping from this rock. Black Rock a fantastic place for snorkeling, with some enthusiasts proclaiming it to be the best location on Maui.

Maui Landmarks and Monuments: Haleakala Crater - Haleakala Highway, Maui, Hawaii (HI), USA
This incredible volcano rises to 10,023 feet / 3,055 meters above sea level and its crater is almost 3,000 feet / 914 meters deep, nearly 8 miles / 13 km long and over 2 miles / 3 km wide. The crater boasts a total circumference of 22 miles / 35 km and the views from the summit are truly magnificent.

The lighthouse at McGregor Point near Maalaea exists to warn ships of coral and the rocky coastline, but is also a great lookout point to view humpback whales that are attracted to the warm waters surrounding Maui between mid-December and mid-April.
